Co. SHC Round One – Cratloe 1-20 Tubber 1-11
With an eight week break before Cratloe's second round tie, its hard to see what either a poor or superb performance would have done as a formguide for the Summer ahead on Sunday last. Two points were imperitive, nomatter what way they were won and those were collected against a Tubber side who in fits and starts troubled Cratloe in Cusack Park but always played second fiddle following a robust opening quarter.
Cratloe didn't settle against a side they were fortunate to defeat twelve months previous, and Tommy Lee and Clive Earley were quickest in sensing it. Sean Collins answered back for Cratloe grabbing three of a total haul of five points for Cratloe in the opening half. Cratloe started opening up and running at the North Clare side soonafter with Sean Chaplin and Aidan Browne in excellent form and Oige Murphy and Damien Browne on top in centrefield. Chaplins marker Justin McMahon received his second yellow for a late pull twenty minutes into the half and when his dismissal was added to with a well worked Padraigh Chaplin goal, the contest was effectively sealed.
Cratloe's old haunt of not putting away a side seemed to catch up with them in the second half as Tubber pulled a nine point deficit into six midway through. David Ryan and Barry Duggan however snuffed out any threat of a goal which was the only way back into the contest for Tubber. Oige Murphy again excelled in the middle of the pitch notching his second point of the day. Sean Chaplin was unerring from frees all through and with Sean Collins and Alan Murphy assisting him excellently in open play, all three managed to dominate Tubber's half back line.
A win is a win as they say, and whether Cratloe set the world on fire in getting one may have counted for little anyhow against physically stronger opposition in August. We did see signs all the same of a side who are more than capable of emerging from this group come the business end of the summer.
