Cratloe defeated in Round Three

Co SHC Rnd 3
St Josephs Doora Barefield 1-16 v 0-13 Cratloe

Cratloe’s hopes of emerging from their group in this years county SHC took a pummelling against a hungrier looking St Josephs Doora Barefield in Clareabbey on Friday night. A very poor showing by the blues in the opening half had them nine points adrift at the interval and a physically stronger Josephs side quelled any sporadic comeback that was to come in the second half.

As underdogs, Cratloe probably needed the better start in this tussle but when a Paul Dullaghan pull ended up in the net following a goalmouth scramble it looked as if ‘the parish’ had already set out their stall after only three minutes. Cratloe looked nervous and sluggish to the ball in the opening quarter and saw their deficit widen with more points from Damien Kennedy, Dullaghan and Conor Hassett who was unerring from frees all night. Aidan Browne was the blue’s only scorer from play in the opening half with a point on fifteen minutes added to by two more frees from his brother Damian before the interval.

Cratloe did improved after the break but Joseph’s lead always seemed too big to overhaul. Points from Sean Chaplin,Oige Murphy and a brace from Aidan Browne did have the Blues within four points of St Josephs as ten minutes remained but it seemed everytime Cratloe pulled themselves into the tie, Hassetts freetaking kept the gap between the sides.

Next up for Cratloe is a rival pairing with Sixmilebridge who themselves have to rely on other results to maintain their interest following a two point defeat to Tubber on Saturday. Regardless of the opposition, Cratloe will have to be a lot livlier than they were in the opening half to win either of their final two rounds.

CRATLOE; S Hawes, P Gleeson, B Duggan, D Ryan, J O Gorman, M Hawes, S Ryan, M Og Murphy (0-2), D Browne (0-7), A Browne (0-3), S Collins, S Chaplin (0-1), B Gleeson, P Chaplin, G Ryan.
