Clare Cup win vs Clarecastle

Clare Cup Rnd 4
Cratloe 0-21 v 1-8 Clarecastle

Cratloe’s comfortable win over Clarecastle eventually got the hangover that has been the 2010 Clare Cup underway with a win on Saturday evening last. Relieving as it was, the victory actually did little to alter Cratloe’s position at the foot of the Division One table as the underdogs seemed to triumph throughout the Round 4 fixtures. What it does do however is put a steadier complexion on Cratloe’s preparation for Championship, now only a fortnight away.

Truthfully Clarecastle, unbeaten until Saturday afternoon, offered little obstruction in Cratloe gaining their first league points. After a hungrier opening quarter, the winners, playing at home for the first time, stamped their authority on the contest with quicker movement than the visitors. Cratloe’s passing game created an overlap on numerous occasions offering the launch pad for a 0-6 to 0-2 lead after fifteen minutes. On the mark were Sean Collins, Sean Chaplin, Conor McGrath, and Conor Ryan. Damien Browne was faultless with his frees in this period but also covered enough ground from play to torment the Clarecastle half back line.

The Magpies rallied toward the close of the opening half and with an Aaron Considine point and a brace from Tyrone Kierce they remarkably found themselves only a puck of a ball adrift 0-10 to 0-07 at the break.

The second period however commenced similarly to the first with Cratloe’s short ball approach seemingly sapping the energy from Clarecastle’s centrefield. Oige Murphy and Liam Markham excelled amongst Cratloe’s defence and the midfield pairing of Cathal McInerney and Sean Chaplin rewarded their performances with further points. Conor Ryan brought his tally to 0-4 as the final quarter approached and a superb effort from Barry Gleeson from the shade of the tractor shed put the contest beyond doubt.

Clarecastle had only looked to have put a sheen on their score with a Tyrone Kierce 21’ yard free but indeed the home side were spared a nervous finalé when a first timed Jonathan Clancy pull flew just wide soonafter. Padraigh Chaplin rifled over a late reply to end Cratloe’s scoring near the finish.

As stated Cratloe will look upon the win as a timely improvement before championship beckons and will hardly analyse the points bearing on the Clare Cup table until further into the campaign. Next up is the championship's opening round duel with Inagh Kilnamona, who themselves head into championship bolstered with a league victory over Sixmilebridge at the weekend.
