Clare with double victory over Waterford
Clare 2-20 Waterford 1-15
The Clare senior hurlers recorded their first Munster Championship win in five years yesterday with a comprehensive 8 point victory over the Deise men. Over 12,000 punters who made the trip to Semple Stadium witnessed an impressive second half performance, by the Banner men which included two goals. The first from last years county minor star Shane O'Donnell. The Eire Og man instinctively doubled the loose ball from Tony Kelly's saved 21 yard free to the back of the Waterford net. This put us 3 points clear and 8 minutes later when our own Conor McGrath raced onto a breaking ball and with sniper like accuracy slipped it past Ian O'Regan, there was no coming back for the Waterford men. Podge Collins replaced the afore mentioned O Donnell in the 55th minute just after his goal, reminiscent of the Eamonn Taaffe scenario in '95! Brendan Bugler was a powerhouse in defense and the all-star was acknowledged with the man of the match award.
Clare now go on to meet Cork in the Munster Semi Final on June 23rd at the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick at 4pm, and Davy Fitzgerald's men know that a massive test awaits them.
Scorers: Colin Ryan 0-7 (6f 1 65), Tony Kelly 0-4, Shane O Donnell (1-0), Conor McGrath (1-0), John Conlon 0-3, Darach Honan 0-3, Colm Galvin 0-2, Fergal Lynch 0-1
The Clare Intermediates cruised into the Munster semi-final in the curtain raiser in Semple Stadium on a score line of 2-21 to 0-16. Well done to Enda Boyce who lined out for Clare at wing back in a young team, featuring many of the minors and under 21s who have tasted success in the last year or two under Donal Maloney and Gerry O'Connor. Aidan Lynch and Gary Guilfoyle contributed 2-9 between them to kill off the Deise men's challenge. They too can look forward to a meeting with the rebels on 23rd June with throw in there at 1.45pm.
Scorers – Clare: G Guilfoyle 1-5 (0-4fs), A Lynch 1-4, C Malone 0-5, P Sheehan 0-3, M O’Neill 0-2, N Arthur, C O’Connell 0-1 each.
