Clare county senior hurling quarter final replay
CRATLOE..............0-18 BROADFORD.....0-8
By Michael O Connor.
Cratloe have continued their upward spiral in the hurling world with a comprehensive fast paced success over a Broadford side that were pale shadows of the drawn encounter. The South Clare club are the busiest club in the county with teams contesting every grade at A grade at adult level. This season alone they have won the intermediate and Under 21A football titles but the big one is to come as a result of this stylish win on Saturday.
Cusack park was in perfect condition but the small attendance suggested that perhaps the timing of the game and anger that it was not a double header with the following day’s semi final had dissuaded spectators especially neutrals from attending. At the second time of asking Cratloe have advanced to the last four of the Clare SHC with a comprehensive win over a limited Broadford side in Cusack park on Saturday.
At the end of the first quarter Cratloe led (0-4) to (0-2) with Damian Browne and Niall Moloney on target for the sides as the Cratloe freetaker punished every indiscretion created by Broadford. James Enright became the game’s third scorer as Aonghus O Brien sent a simple free wide of the Cratloe goal highlighting a game to be forgotten by Broadford. Sean Chaplin, quelled by Broadford in the drawn encounter was far more effective second time around and added two points to the Cratloe tally with the first coming after 21 minutes. Padraig Taylor ended a mini drought of Broadford scores with his sides first successful effort in 12 minutes.
Cathal McInerney,Damian Browne, and Sean Chaplin with point number two stretched the winners lead to six points, (0-9) to (0-3) with five minutes remaining in normal time. Cathal Chaplin who lined out in the unusual position of corner forward that freed up Sean Chaplin to run free down the wing converted two frees in the last minutes of the first half as James Enright sent over his second score.
Underlying comments at the break was the knowledge that Broadford needed the first goal early in the second half but it was not to be Little changed in the second half as Cratloe continued their dominance with Damian Browne on target once more to finish with ten points. Padraig Hickey struck first with the opening score of the new half but it was fools gold as Cratloe through Browne responded in lightening fashion with a free as Broadford continued their penchant for regular fouling under pressure from Cratloe pace. Aonghus O Brien who suffered a first half leg injury retired injured robbing the intermediate champions of the regular top scorer. To compound their misery for the second week running Padraig Hickey was ineffective against the confident Cratloe full back line.
In the same attack Conor McGrath and Aidan Browne missed a goal chance in the 38th minute before Padraig Taylor rounded off a Diarmuid Skehan attack with a well taken point. The following five points over a 13 minute period all went the way of Cratloe with Browne (4) and McGrath the sharpshooter. Cratloe brought on a near full complement of replacements with Barry Gleeson making a bid for a bigger role in the semi final with an excellent score in the 57th minute. The final attack of the game resulted in a point from a free by Craig Chaplin but the result was obvious from the 45th minute. One interesting statistic from the game was the return of just one point from Conor McGrath and Aonghus O Brien. Normally at least ten points would have been expected from this talented duo.
Best for the winners who now face a totally different obstacle in Kilmaley and will struggle if dragged into the centre were Sean Hawes, Michael Hawes, Liam Markham Barry Duggan, John O Gorman who excelled, Sean Collins, James Enright and Cathal McInerney. A disjointed Broadford side have enjoyed a year of great progress and have still to face Crusheen in the Clare cup semi final with high hopes of advancement to a cup decider. The vanquished had strong performances from Kevin Ryan, Kieran Corcoran, James Gunning, Niall Moloney, Peter O Brien and Padraig Taylor.
