Co. SFC Semi Final

Kilmurry/Ibrickane 1-7 v 0-9 Cratloe

Cratloe’s dream of a Senior double came to an end in a wintery Lissycasey on Saturday evening last when, despite a late rally, they succumbed to Kilmurry/Ibrickane by the minimum for the second season in a row. It was a cruel exit from what was a very consistent championship for Colm Collins’s charges and one which looked liked being rescued in amazing fashion after fighting back level from six points in arrears.

Admittedly Kilmurry Ibrickane did play most of the football in this tie. The narrow spaces of Lisseycasey never allowed Cratloe to enjoy as much success from their running game as they had at County headquarters for much of the season.

The West Clare men were responsible for some beautiful link play themselves and forged ahead straight away with 1-3 on the scoreboard after only fifteen minutes. Their inside forward line were wreaking havoc with Noel Downes and Ian McInerney pointing before Michael O Dwyer raced on to a breaking ball to score the ties only goal after 10 minutes. Credit to Cratloe who stemmed the tide with frees from Cathal McInerney and Liam Markham to lie four points adrift at the interval – 1-4 to 0-3.

The second period however started in the same vain as that of the opening half, with the movement of Downes again causing panic. Two fouls on the Mullagh attacker resulted in Ian McInerney stretching Kilmurry’s lead to six points within the opening ten minutes but from there it seemed the 2009 All Ireland Club finalists ran out of gas.

Cratloe pegged them back for the remainder, mainly through the unerring frees of McInerney and Markham. With three minutes to play, the duo had Cratloe level from placed balls 1-6 to 0-9 but the underdogs failed to find the composure on a few occasions infront of goal to win the contest.

Not to be overtaken, Kilmurry/Ibrickane introduced Johnny Daly to kick a sublime winner at the end of a Niall Hickey assist. Despite their late scare they hold out to play St. Josephs Doora/Barefield and try to claim their ninth title. Cratloe can again be proud of their progress. Even with the rigours of being a duel club with a small pool they are steadily becoming serious contenders for the Jack Daly cup. Here’s to next year and hopefully one step further.

Cratloe: Jamie Joyce; Seán Chaplin, Barry Duggan, David Ryan; Óige Murphy, Michael Hawes, Liam Markham; Conor Ryan, Brendan Bugler; Wes Deloughrey, Seán Collins, Seán Hynan; Cathal McInerney, Conor McGrath, Podge Collins.
Subs: Padraig Chaplin (38) and Damien Browne (48).

Scorers: Cathal McInerney and Liam Markham (0-4f each) and Podge Collins (0-1).
