Under 21 A Football Champions

Cratloe 2-10 Ennistymon 2-7
16th October 2011

It was the last championship action of the year for Cratloe and they were not leaving Cusack Park without the silverware. It was the least they deserved after the year they put down in both football and hurling. With the majority of this group also involved in one or both of our Senior semi-final defeats in the last few weeks, defeat on Sunday was not an option!

The North Clare side made the better start going 1-2 to a point up after Sean McConigley converted a penalty. But Cratloe immediately countered with a goal of their own, through Conor McGrath. David Collins’ effort came off the woodwork and McGrath was quickest to react. Our free takers swapped scores before Cratloe finished the half with three lovely points from play, one from the hard working Padraic Collins and two from man of the match Wesley de Loughrey, leaving Cratloe 1-5 to 1-3 up.

Again Ennistymon made the better start after the break, outscoring Cratloe by 1-3 to 1 point within the first ten minutes. But it was their goal that sprung Cratloe back to life. Cathal McInerney clocked up three more frees and Liam Markham added another. Ennistymon had their last score of the game through Danny Rouine’s third converted free of the day. David Collins struck a goal in the 50th minute and Cratloe closed out the game comfortably with two points from Cathal McInerney and Wesley de Loughrey. It was a deserving victory and badly needed. Jamie Joyce was presented with the Marrinan Cup by County Board Chairman Michael O’Neill.

This marks the end of our participation in the Championship for 2011. Congratulations and thank you to the players and mentors of all our senior panels, your dedication to the club and games are truly admirable. Our next outing isn’t far off though as a Division 3 football semi-final clash against Kilmihil awaits us this Saturday at 2pm in Gurteen.
